I'm currently studying Nutrition and Food Science, and we have A LOT to do with science. We take courses in chemistry, Biology, organic chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, and integrative nutrition and metabolism, plus all of our food science and nutrition science courses. We learn the science behind all of the recommendations that we pass along to you. We know WHY we recommend vitamins and minerals, by understanding the physiological functions they have in the body. We understand how without those nutrients our body begins to function improperly. We take entire courses teaching us about all sorts of different diseases, why they happen, and how the nutrients you consume will effect those, both for good and bad. Nutrition is far more than "don't eat junk food."

Food Science students generally study the science behind the mass production of food. The course work includes a lot of biology, chemistry and physics and scientific studies. Nutrition is a area that deals with nutritional content (fats, carbs, protein, etc.) of food and the effect on the body. Depending what part of the world you are in, a nutritionist may or may not have had specialized training. See Related Links. A food scientist may have performed the tests to determine the nutritional content of food. A nutritionist might be the one who puts it to practical use.
